Richard Cabot posted an update
xDear Ed,
I'm sorry that my schedule doesn't allow me to to attend the OMF
developers' conference in New Orleans. However, it may be appropriate to
offer a few words at this time.
BWF Audio Files.
There are many competent file formats that can be used to store audio data.
When deciding on a standard recently, the EBU (the European Broadcast
Union) adapted a simple and widely available file format.
The EBU Broadcast Wave Format (BWF) comprises a conventional RIFF Wave file
with an additional header chunk in each file to carry a set of source
identification and timecode information. These extra parameters provide
the hooks necessary to pass sound recording through the many stages of
complex production and post production jobs without overburdening simpler
applications. Importantly, 'timecode' information is incremented at audio
sample rate to give a very high resolution time reference that is
independent of, but which can be used with, any conventional timecode or
film/TV picture frame rate. This promises smoother interchange both
internationally and cross-media.
AES
When the AES Standards Working Group on Audio File Exchange also considered
the requirements of a sound file to form part of a wider - and scaleable -
interchange scheme, a similar set of features was required. The AES
Working Group is expected to adopt and standardise the EBU BWF audio file
format.
The AES standard will use these audio files both standalone and within two
types of Project Structure (organisational structures that will facilitate
edited material to be passed from one piece of equipment to another). A
Simple Project Structure will comprise a fairly conventional Edit Decision
List (EDL). The Object Oriented Project Structure will be capable of
conveying more processing information; an audio-specific subset of OMF is
proposed for this role.
Accordingly, I am happy that the OMF format will be able to use EBU BWF
files. This provides for a degree of synergy between different
applications and stages of production that I think will be beneficial to
the industry at large.
Detailed information on the BWF is available from the EBU web site at:
http://www.ebu.ch//pmc_bwf.html
Sample files are available from Swedish Radio at:
http://www.sr.se/rd/bwf/
I wish you all a great time in the (comparatively) warm South.

Dear Ed,
This relates to our discussions before the holiday.
It is apparent that, even with an audio-only subset of the OMF scheme, the
AES group is having some difficulty discussing the subject with the
experience and authority necessary for its practical implementation as a
general interchange standard.
To keep this topic moving forwards, I wonder if it would be possible to
form a number of experienced people, perhaps from within the OMF Developers
group, into an AES Task Group. The role of this Task Group would be to
provide advice to the SC-06-01 AES Working Group on practical matters
related to the implementation of OMF in audio systems.
You have very kindly offered to explore the possibility. Could I ask you
to consider this during the OMF Developers Conference next week and let me
know you thoughts as soon as possible?
Many thanks

AESSC has become a B-member of the DVD Forum, the successor to the DVD
Consortium. As a B-member, we can participate in the working groups, but
without an official vote. I have listed the programs of the two working
groups that are related to audio.
The WG10 group is being chaired by Steve Sohma, one of our vice-chairs and a
member of our Steering Committee. He has scheduled the next meeting of WG10
for 1998-02-05 14:00 at Pioneer headquarters in Tokyo.
I will be preparing the full Forum prospectus for downloading from our FTP
site. Thus far, we have not received machine-readable copy, so it will take
time. Rather than delay any more, I have included only the programs of the
two groups in this memo. We need to consider how to participate in the
proceedings.

Dear Mr Queen,
Thank you for your email. You have addressed it to Mr Verrier at Digigram
verrier@digigram.com), who have forwarded it to me.
Digigram is very much interested in some participation with regards to the
DVD standards proceedings, and definitely we would appreciate to be
informed about the progress. It will be very difficult to arrange my
schedule on such a short notice ( for the Tokyo meeting), however if you
would be so kind and let me know the schedules for the next meetings, I
would do my best to attend at least some of them.
In the mean time please be so kind and replace Mr Verriers name and email
address with mine as he is now involved in another project. If it is
possible, please add Mr Patrick Tardy ( tardy@digigram.com) - Market
Research to the emailing list.
Best regards,
