Page 20 When setting the level of a test signal in comparison to the level of the background noise it is best to consider the frequency dependent nature of the noise and not just the broad band level of the noise. Why are only 1/2" mics mentioned for improved noise survey? One inch mics should perform better than 1/2" mics. Page 21 Using the word "preferred" when referencing NC might be confusing. Someone might think that the preferred noise criteria (PNC) is the metric to be used instead of the noise criteria (NC). Is setting all level controls to unity gain really what is intended? Page 25 Using the phase "opposite side of the scale" to describe a polarity difference seems to not be very rigorous. The setup of the display may not lend itself to have this phase carry much meaning. Page 28 Why is data allowed to be discarded because it doesn't match another measurement? Why is a 20 second average required? Is this due to potential S/N issues? Page 31 There is no Table 2.16.a The broad band SPL (both A-weighted & C-weighted) given in Table 1.13.a are a bit confusing. Are these supposed to be the summed SPL for the 1/3 octave center frequencies from 500 Hz to 2 kHz, inclusive, given an SPL of 71.5 dB in each band? If so, these values do not correlate with each other. I would like to fill in a few comments too: 1. The FFT is dangerous when amplitude accuarcy is of interest. An FFT assumes stationary and narrowband signals (tonal) and then the scaling MUST be V^2. The correct Window must be used and the FFT must have the proper scaling (many analyzers don not have that and I am not kidding). If this is not handled properly it is possible to have very large amplitude errors. I have published multiple papers on the topic, if of interest. The text is way to weak to “force” users to do the right thing. (e.g. page 11). When changing from “tone” to “pink noise” the amplitude scaling MUST change if amplitude errors should be controlled! (should now be V^2/Hz and this must be mentioned) 2. Page 20 says "to ensure that data-windowing does not result in suppression of transient events.” The FFT is NOT able to handle transient events and have a proper amplitude accuracy and hence, this argument is not valid. The overlapping is used to minimize slowly varying changes in the data (statistical variations). If there are transient events in the data, these must be handled via Energy Spectral Density and not by Power Spectral Density! 3. Coherence is a number that should be in between 0-1, not -180 to 100 and in percent. (e..g page 19) 4. I would like to see the use of dBZ instead of “unweighted”.
