Meeting Topic: Weekly Meeting: Progress on the Professional Microphone Assembly Project

      Moderator Name: Federico Gironelli

Speaker Name: Santiago Botta – Federico Gironelli

Meeting Location: Ciudad Autonoma de Buenos Aires (Zoom)

      Summary

On Monday, July 29, progress continued on the project “Build Your Own Microphone and Hear What Happens…” and its sister project “Recording a Characterful Drum Set for Under $100.”

The meeting began with student Santiago Botta showing two microphones he made using speakers from a 5.1 sound system. Although both had similar constructions, the sonic characteristics and possibilities they offered were entirely different.

To test them and demonstrate their practical capabilities, a drum set was recorded using only two microphones: a Shure SM58 overhead and the microphone made by Santiago placed in different positions around the room to determine where the microphone’s unique character was most favorable. This procedure was performed with both microphones. The audio recordings will be shared, and conclusions will be drawn from the experience.

Next, various members’ questions about microphone construction and its possibilities were addressed. The importance of studying electronics in the sound career was also discussed. Additionally, information was shared about different microphone projects, such as ribbon microphones, condenser microphones, electret microphones, and the construction of audio transformers.

To conclude, a forum and debate were held on the possibility of conducting research that includes comparing analog equipment and their plugin versions. The discussion covered how to write the project and implement it, considering the possibility of dividing the project into simpler parts at first and gradually increasing the requirements.
